Reader Submitted: Wrestling in Second Life

By Avina Wyndham (Saria)

So they say in Second Life you can do anything you want.  Want to joust?  You can! Just don't wager against Bixyl.  Want to play a fire breathing dragon in a modern sim?  You can do that! Want to wrestle?  You can do that!

Wait, what?  Wrestling?  In Second Life?

YES.  Plenty of options, from the newbie friendly Pro-Ball, to the fetish satisfying pornball, to the advanced HUD system.  In this article, I'm going to try to explain these three vastly different systems to clarify it for people, because they all often get confused.

We're going to start with something I do, and used to do a lot more.  HUD wrestling. HUD wrestling uses something called Nexgen.  It's a complex system with a fairly steep learning curve that uses gesture based animations.  While it's VERY intimidating out of the box, it's actually not bad at all.  Every fed either has a trainer, or an entire NXT type developmental program.  You're paired up with a "Pro", and they will walk you through the system.  The HUD system uses various aspects of second life to make it work.  A targeting system that "Locks" onto your opponent, allowing you to only do the moves to the, and allowing them to react.

In a HUD system, things are much more intricate and complex, and it's the most "Free" form of wrestling in second life currently.  Using gestures and moves, your possibilities of moves are endless.  Tie that in with the custom move community, where you can pay animators to design that move you saw in wrestling for yourself.  This, literally, makes the move possibilities infinite.  There is no end to the customization capabilities of the NexGen system in second life.  It is hands down THE most powerful wrestling system in second life currently.  Nothing can get near to it in it's freedom.  But as said earlier, it's  got a steep learning curve.  But if you want to put in the time and effort, it can be a lot of fun.  I'll list the current feds and contact names at the end of this article.  I'll end this section with a quote from Gwenivere Swansong, who was quoted awhile back in another article on SL Wrestling.  She was in the new defunct uWs as the Women's Champion, and is a friend of mine from way back "in the day".  I asked her what made a good HUD wrestler:

Gwenivere Swansong: "I think what makes you a good hud wrestler is practice and knowing your animations.. My opinion of it is that it is an amazing system, I am in absolute favor of hud over poseball. I think it's more realistic. But again, it's all about the effort you put into it and practicing. The more you practice the easier and smoother it will be. I've seen many wrestlers spend numerous hours practicing alone and with others, the ones who really put in the dedication are the ones who shine the brightest."

(Please note this is only an opinion of one person and does not represent the entire community)

Let's now discuss the other form.  Pro-Ball/ vs Catfighting/Pornball

Poseball wrestling is looked down upon by some members of the hud wrestling community (Note, SOME).  However, recently a split happened in the pose-community, with Pro-Ball emerging as a rapidly growing trend.  Pro-Ball, unlike it's counterpart Catfight, is CLEAN, Professional Wrestling.  These wrestlers rely on emote's and description, as well as stringing together a series of moves.  A typical match is called a 2-4 YT, where you can take anywhere from 2 moves, to 4, or even more if agreed upon, during your turn.  This system is driven by using poseballs, or in the newer "BLD" mats, simply by sitting in the corner.

The need for "Poseballs" is vanishing with this new type of system.  However, many mats still require them.  Unlike HUD, there are several types of matches and mats, but for pro-ball, the most popular is BLD or Divas ex9.  The BLD has become more popular lately due to its 100's of moves and VAST menu system.  We'll discuss those in a moment here.

PRO BALL is, as stated earlier, is professional.  Many places offer pro- as an option, with only one or two exceptions that I'm aware of.  One organization is quickly seperating themselves from the entire poseball "Community", and that is PURE.  PURE is as close to HUD as you can get, allowing freedom of weekly storylines, mats that will accept using the NexGen HUD system on them (Only the BLD does not accept the system, but you don't need it).

This organization even has a title belt, which has been defended on several occasions.  The storyline's help to add a degree of legitimacy and help blur the line between HUD and POSE, a refreshing change since just 2 short years ago, the pose community was all but shunned by the HUD community, mostly due to our next topic:

Catfight.

I'm not going into detail on this, because there's not much to say.  Catfight is what you probably think of when you hear "Poseball".  It's not really wrestling (In my PERSONAL opinion), so much as soft, sometimes hard, core pornography.  This form of wrestling starts with two scantily clad women facing off, and by the end of the match are completly naked.by the end of the match, and sometimes doing things that should be saved for the bedroom.

HOWEVER, that being said, there are some that make this kind of stuff worth watching, as their skills with words outweigh what's going on in the ring.  I recently caught two friends in a match.  I almost left, but the way they described the actual moves, you felt like you were front row at a match!

I'm going to end talking about the different types of mats in Pose, at least the ones I'm aware of.

Rumble mat:  Basic mat, it has a decent set of animations, good for a beginner, although the mis-labeling of moves is the highest in this mat than any of the others.

Divas EX9: This is my personal favorite.  Only one or two mislabeled moves, and quite a few others, gives this mat a great feel.  It's robust, but not TOO overwhelming, and the menu system is friendly and easy to use.  It has a nice array of moves for both pro-ball and catfighting.  Definitely one to learn on.

Catfight Mat:  This one has some great moves as well, but it's more designed for...well, catfights, obviously.  This mat has more striking moves than the EX 9, however, it also has a whole lot of dirty moves as well.

BLD:  This is the biggest, most expensive, most complicated mat out there.  With several hundred moves, and several "Expansions", this mat is hands down the most powerful mat in SL wrestling today.  It has EVERYTHING you can think of, from a simple hairpull, to a complicated series of moves.  The BLD has a steep learning curve compared to the others, but in the end, it's well, well worth it.  The combination possibilities if you know this mat well can rival that of a HUD wrestlers.  It has one massive downside, however.  The moves make you feel like you're going in slow motion.  Several attempts by people to speak to the owners to speed up the animations have been met with refusal, so while you look good, you're moving in slow motion while doing so unfortunately.

Every mat has it's pros and cons, feel free to ask a booker like Candee Hannu at Inhibitions if you're interested in a match, or drop me a line, and I'll do my best to help you learn!  (This applies to HUD wrestling as well, just don't ask Candee about that :P)

K-SOCCER : Football within Second Life

By Wesley Regenbogen
K-SOCCER is a football field (or soccer field to Americans) created on the 25th of March 2015 by Jayra79 Resident. What’s special about this football project ? Well, they teach newbies how to play and follow them closely. Like in real life football, actually, I presume.

Next to the football field there are stairs that take you up in the relax area, where you can sit down and relax. Or when you played a match, you can rest there for a while.
The football field is unique in Second Life. I haven’t tried out playing football in Second Life, but I might give it a try myself. On how to play, I received a notecard from the owner with some instructions. Near the field there are four totems one clicks to get a "K-Soccer" kit, a goalkeeper HUD, a player HUD, as well as a link to the group one can join. Players need to select "Always Run" on their viewer, which they can be clicking CTLR + R - if you want to walk again click CTLR + R again. To play, it's best that one does so in mouselook. To get a ball, "to the field if you need a ball click on the center circle with the left mouse button."

"Before the game you must click on the center of the midfield - you see on the screen a window with team or team b - DEVEI you choose one of the two teams and you can play. To join a game in progress you need to click on the center of the midfield - you see a window with the join - click and choose freely join one of the teams. Of course the most common colors are blue and red kits whiteOur do u kit benfica for red - Real Madrid for the white - blue for schalke04." For any questions, one is invited to message Dreewan Resident. Readers can find more information about the place in the landmark.

They are working on creating their own website and they advertise themselves on SL radio. So, they will have a website in the near future. But for now, they have a Facebook group and can be found through Twitch.tv (http://www.twitch.tv/ ) , as some players broadcast their matches on the internet.
On the 15th of June 2015 they will hold their World Cup and teams can sign up for it soon.
Personally, I think this place and the project is a mention worth, although I’m not a football fan myself. So I’m not going to become a professional K-SOCCER player. But it’s cool to be able to play sports in Second Life.

So, if you're into football in Second Life, why not join them and join the competition? Be sure to check out this place. Have fun and enjoy the game !

Reader Submitted: The Return of DWRT

DWRT recently returned to the airwaves and I sat down with its producer and creator, Ranma Yoshiro for a brief chat.

"Welcome back to the air," I say as I sit back at the large table at the DWRT studios. "Thank you", Ranma smiles as he sits opposite me.

"How does it feel to be bringing DWRT back to the airwaves?"

"It feels great. After a year and a half, it was something that needed to be done."

"So, why now? What inspired you to bring it back at this time?" I can tell this is going to be a well-thought out response, and I look forward to Ranma's answer...

"When I originally started DWRT back in December of 2010, it was meant to find a way to bring all the different federations in Second Life together. At the time, some of the federations were out to set their own standard in SL wrestling. I wanted to bring them together in a sort or community type of setting. After running the first season, we hit a bit of a snag with someone more or less flat out bashing everyone, and I decided to put the show on hiatus because it seemed to cause a bigger rift between the federations. Bringing it back was an easy decision though. A few months ago, we all started talking about doing a big show for charity, and it lead to the different feds to combine their efforts and do Give Back 2012 for Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. When I saw that a once fractured relationship between the feds can lead to something so huge, I knew it was time to bring the show back."

"Very good response and nothing better than raising money for a worthwhile cause to bond the community. So, for the uninitiated as in, those outside of the SL wrestling community, what is DWRT?" One thing any outsider needs to understand - there are a lot of abbreviations in the SL wrestling world!

"DWRT stands for Digital Wrestling Round Table. It is a show dedicated to showcasing wrestling in Second Life" DWRT held its return show on Friday July 20 and received very positive feedback. Their second show (and the one I was lucky enough to tune into!) was aired on Friday July 27.

"Will you have regular segments? Can you tell us what some of those will be?"

"We are still working on what segments that will be aired. We started one this past show called, 'Mike's Mad Minute.' One of the wrestlers, MadMikeFreeman Straaf, is being given one minute to rant about anything he wants. It's quite entertaining hearing him go off on a tangent. We have some more ideas, but I don't want to spoil it."

"Oohh sounds exciting. Of course, every SL wrestling show needs a crazy man ranting!" The thought of Mike's last 'Mad Minute' is enough to produce a couple of laughs. "If someone wanted to get involved with DWRT, how can they?"

"We have a sponsorship package that we've introduced for anyone that would like to get a small ad about their place of business out on the airwaves. The sponsorship package entails us making a small 'commercial' that will be aired during the show, and placement of the business location on our website as well."

"That sounds like a great idea!"

"I'm all about helping the businesses in Second Life get their product out there." Ranma informs me that anyone is welcome to go to the in-world location of the DWRT Studio to place a donation as well. Check out all the essential info at the end of this article.

"And that's a fantastic way to be. I am sure that a lot of businesses in SL would appreciate any opportunity to promote their products, especially the not-so-famous ones."

"By spreading the word for them, they can also help us benefit too. It's a win-win!!"

"We at the show have just about everything covered as for production. Our main focus is to bring in fans of wrestling, and the best way to support us is to check out the many different feds in Second Life. Of course, and there are so many to check out and with all different kinds of wrestlers from all around the world. There is really something for everyone! We all have our favourite wrestlers, of course I am a little biased!"

"Yes there is. Just because your husband is one of our hosts I bet!!"

I can't help but laugh at this. Of course, my husband is none other than Curt Bombastic, a well-known heel in the SL wrestling world and also part of the team at DWRT, "On a personal level, what are you hoping to achieve with the return of DWRT?"

"Just to bring SL wrestling into a more prominent spotlight in SL itself. There are so many people that don't even know that it exists."

"Yeah that is true. I know before I met my husband I had never heard of it! In regards to what you said earlier, about the community being 'fractured' due to some people involved, how do you think the community is able to become strong again, in what ways can they achieve this?"

"I won't mention any names, but some of the people that caused the friction between the feds are no longer involved with the management side of wrestling, and with new leadership, people started communicating. It has led to the Federations to being able to work together, like with Giveback 2012, and built a stronger bond.

"That is great and it gives the community somewhere positive to go in the future as well"

Ranma nods, "I agree wholeheartedly."

"So please tell the readers who makes up the team here at DWRT and what do they do?"

"Myself as the producer of the show. I handle streaming and recording the show. Celtdan McMahon is our lead host for the show. Curt Bombastic, Maxine Darkwatch, and recently, Derrick Zane, are our other co-hosts that represent a mix of the different feds in SL wrestling."

"Sounds like a great team! Thank you for your time today Ranma, one more question, and this is the all important one...how do we tune into the show?"

"We stream the show into Second Life live every Friday at 3pm SLT. There are a few places that stream the show and you can listen from the player on the website at http://dwrt.webs.com or in your Windows based player at this link: http://66.45.227.195:5002"

"Once again, thank you for your time today Ranma, and good luck with next week's show."

So, in case you didn't catch all the important details, here they are again!
Tune into the live DWRT show every Friday from 3pm SLT on the website at http://dwrt.webs.com or in your Windows based player at this link: http://66.45.227.195:5002.
